Goikoetxea Maradona Tackle (1983): Barcelona Won 4-0 and Lost Diego

The Goikoetxea Maradona tackle came on Saturday 24 September 1983 at the Camp Nou, matchday four of the 1983-84 Primera Division season and among the ugliest nights our On This Day series covers. Andoni Goikoetxea of Athletic Club went through the back of Diego Maradona and broke his left ankle. Barcelona still won 4-0. Athletic Club’s own match record times the substitution at 59 minutes. Barcelona were 2-0 up by then on the same record’s goal times, and Maradona did not play again until 8 January 1984.

What follows is the match sheet, the minute, the surgery performed that same night, a ban that shrank on appeal to a figure nobody agrees on, and the title Barcelona lost by one point.

The Night the Camp Nou Heard Maradona’s Ankle Go

Goikoetxea Had Already Done This Once

Less than two years earlier, on 13 December 1981, Goikoetxea had gone through Bernd Schuster’s knee. FC Barcelona’s own page on the German puts it plainly: in the 1981-82 season Schuster was seriously injured by a severe tackle from the Athletic Bilbao defender. Schuster came back, though the player who returned was never quite the one Barcelona had bought, and everyone in the ground on 24 September 1983 knew exactly who Goikoetxea was.

Athletic arrived under Javier Clemente with Andoni Zubizarreta in goal, the eleven set out on Athletic’s own team sheet for the night. Barcelona had Maradona and a manager barely six months into the job: FC Barcelona’s card for the 1983-84 season dates Cesar Luis Menotti’s arrival to March 1983. On paper it was the fixture of the autumn.

Barcelona 4-0 Athletic Club, Matchday Four

The football, before the foul, was one-sided. Periko Alonso opened the scoring on 38 minutes from a Maradona pass, the only assist Transfermarkt credits him with that night, and Julio Alberto made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time, timed at 44 by Athletic Club and Transfermarkt and at 45 by BDFutbol. Athletic changed two players on 50 minutes. Barcelona then went almost the entire second half without adding to it, before Marcos struck on 88 and Carrasco on 89.

A quiet joke sits inside that scoresheet. Periko Alonso, scorer of the first, is the father of Xabi Alonso, as LaLiga’s own profile of the family confirms. Marcos, scorer of the third, was Marcos Alonso Pena, father of the Marcos Alonso who would later play for Barcelona himself.

How the evening unfolded:

• 38′ Periko Alonso scores from a Maradona pass, 1-0.
• 44′ Julio Alberto doubles it, 2-0, which is how it stays until the closing minutes.
• 50′ Athletic reshuffle, Julio Salinas and Sarabia on for Endika and De la Fuente.
• 57-59′ Schuster fouls Goikoetxea heavily. Seconds later Goikoetxea goes after Maradona.
• 59′ Maradona is taken off, Esteban replaces him. Goikoetxea stays on with a yellow card.
• 88′ Marcos makes it 3-0.
• 89′ Carrasco finishes the scoring, 4-0.

The Minute of the Goikoetxea Maradona Tackle

Pin down the minute and the retellings start to disagree. ESPN Deportes places the foul ten minutes into the second half, seconds after Schuster had gone in hard on Goikoetxea. Spanish accounts are later and tighter: El Grafico puts it fourteen minutes into the half, La Tercera and Cronica Global at 59, VAVEL at 57. Since every account has Maradona carried straight off, the window between 57 and 59 fits the substitution Athletic Club logs on 59, and a figure nearer 55 leaves an unexplained gap. Vice, in its account of the incident, has Barcelona 3-0 ahead by then. That cannot hold: the third goal did not arrive until 88 minutes, and Transfermarkt gives half time as 2-0. Other versions have Barcelona 1-0 up. The match sheets settle it at 2-0.

Then there is what the referee did about it. Bartolome Jimenez Madrid booked Goikoetxea, and that was the entire punishment on the night for a challenge that ended a player’s autumn. La Nacion still flags the distance between that yellow card and the 18-match sanction the disciplinary committee handed down afterwards.

What It Cost: 106 Days, 18 Matches, One Point

The Diagnosis and the Operation That Night

El Litoral sets out the medical verdict: a displaced fracture of the peroneal malleolus of the left ankle, with the internal lateral ligament torn away from the bone. Carlos Bestit and Gonzalez Adrio operated the same night. The estimate given at the time is reported variously, four months by El Litoral and six by El Grafico. FC Barcelona’s official history has Maradona out for more than three months, and the calendar puts the gap at 106 days.

He came back on 8 January 1984 and scored twice as Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-1, which is the half of the story the club prefers to tell. ESPN Deportes counts the other half: the next 18 matches Barcelona played, in every competition, went ahead without him.

The Ban That Shrank, and by How Much

Goikoetxea was suspended for 18 matches by the competition committee, then had it cut on appeal, and here the record genuinely splits. ESPN Deportes and El Litoral both put the reduced ban at 10 matches. Panenka and Infobae both put it at seven. The 18 is common to every account; the final figure is not, and quoting one number without the other is picking a side.

The nickname arrived faster than the verdict. Vice credits the British journalist Edward Owen with coining the Butcher of Bilbao after watching the foul, and it followed Goikoetxea into FC Barcelona’s own retelling of the Maradona years. Vice also reports that he kept the boots from that night at home, framed in a glass case.

Athletic Won the Title by One Point

Athletic finished 1983-84 as champions on 49 points, level with Real Madrid, with Barcelona third on 48. RSSSF’s final table shows Barcelona scoring 62 to Real Madrid’s 59 and Athletic’s 53, and conceding 28 against their 37 and 30, and still finishing behind both. Their only trophy that season was the Spanish Super Cup, and Menotti left at the end of it.

The Bernabeu Settled It, Badly

Barcelona and Athletic Club met again in the Copa del Rey final at the Santiago Bernabeu on 5 May 1984. Athletic won 1-0 through Endika on 14 minutes, the same Endika who had been withdrawn on 50 minutes back in September. What survives from it is the final whistle, when the season’s accumulated poison came out in a mass brawl with Maradona at the centre of it.

That was his last competitive act as a Barcelona player. He left for Napoli that summer with 38 goals in 58 matches for the club, and what he became in Italy is the story our film on Diego Maradona tells.
