The delay lent the evening an odd charge. Marseille had spent the summer rebuilding under Roberto De Zerbi, and a fixture they had not won at home in the league for well over a decade now arrived out of its usual rhythm, on a Monday, with Paris distracted by a glittering ceremony of their own. Ligue 1’s own writers enjoyed the irony afterwards: the storm that mattered came from Marseille, a day late.

How Marseille 1-0 PSG Was Won

It took almost no time at all. Marseille won an early corner, swung it into the box, and Lucas Chevalier, the goalkeeper PSG had signed to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, flapped at a Mason Greenwood cross that had taken a deflection and never reached it. That left Nayef Aguerd rising highest to nod into an unguarded net, as France24 reported. Ligue 1’s match report timed the header at four minutes; most reports round it to the fifth. Aguerd was an unlikely matchwinner in one sense and an obvious one in another. The scoreline mattered less than the calendar behind it. Marseille had not beaten PSG at home in Ligue 1 since November 2011, according to AFP, a wait that spanned the entire Qatari era at Paris and a run of Classiques the capital club had come to expect to control. AFP went further: Aguerd’s header was the first time Marseille had so much as scored at home against PSG in the league since 2017. For a support that measures itself against Paris more than any trophy, ending both droughts in one early corner was the night’s real prize.

De Zerbi framed it as more than a smash and grab. His side, he said, had “deserved to win against a team who are defining an era”, as France24 reported, comparing the Paris project to Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan and Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. Whether or not the performance quite matched the billing, the result was Marseille’s clearest statement against Paris in years, and it arrived in his first home Classique in charge.

PSG Beaten While Dembele Lifted the Ballon d’Or

For Paris the timing bordered on cruel. The postponement had shoved the game onto the same Monday as the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet, where a host of the PSG squad were up for the men’s award. While Aguerd’s goal was being defended in the south, Ousmane Dembele was collecting the trophy in the capital, the first PSG player to win it since Lionel Messi in 2021, ahead of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. The champions of France and Europe watched their finest player crowned the world’s best and lost Le Classique on the same night. It was, according to AFP, their first defeat of a season they had begun with four straight wins.
